SNP unambitious for school sport – Lib Dems

Liberal Democrat Sports spokesperson Jim Tolson MSP has criticised the government’s lack of ambition for school sports, pointing to the Liberal Democrats’ target for every child to get the equivalent of one hour of physical activity a day.

The Scottish Government confirmed that it was working towards Scottish schoolchildren having two hours of PE a week.

Commenting, Mr Tolson said:

“I am pleased that the government has finally made up its mind about PE for schoolchildren. Just under a month ago, the Government was all over the place, suggesting one day that the existing target of 2 hours a week would be scrapped and then U-turning later in the week.

“I am disappointed that the SNP has not sought to rethink their ambitions for school sport. Liberal Democrats are much more ambitious and are campaigning for every child to have the equivalent of one hour of physical activity a day.

“The SNP has accepted that childhood obesity is a threat to the future health of our nation, but is reticent about adopting the radical policies necessary to target this ticking timebomb.”
