Biography
Danny Alexander was elected as MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey in May 2005. He has since gained a reputation for speaking out strongly on issues affecting the Highlands - including the impact of high fuel taxation on remote rural areas, the importance of the post office network to Highland communities, and the effect of serious shortcomings in the Tax Credit system administered by Labour. In 2005 Charles Kennedy appointed Danny as Liberal Democrat Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions, and lead Spokesman on disabilities issues. In 2006, he joined the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Social Exclusion. He is a member of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee; he is deputy chair of the All-Party Group on Citizens Advice and Chair of the Associate Parliament Group on Media Literacy.
Danny grew up in Lochaber, attending Lochaber High School, before going on to study Philosophy, Politics and Exconomics at Oxford. He worked as Director of Communications for the European Movement and its successor, Britain in Europe, before returning to the Highlands in 2004 to become Head of Communications for the newly created Cairngorms National Park. He married Rebecca shortly after his election in the summer of 2005 and their home is in Aviemore.
