Biography

Sir Menzies Campbell has been a Member of Parliament for North East Fife since 1987.

Born in 1941, he was educated at Hillhead High School, Glasgow and Glasgow University where he graduated M.A., LL.B., and Stanford University, California, where he carried out postgraduate studies in international law. As an international athlete, he competed in the 1964 (Tokyo) Olympic Games and the 1966 (Jamaica) Commonwealth Games. He captained the United Kingdom athletics team in 1965 and 1966, and held the United Kingdom 100 metres record 1967-1974.

Called to the Scottish bar as an advocate in 1968, he was awarded the CBE in the New Years Honours of 1987, appointed to the Privy Council in 1999 and Knighted in 2004 for services to Parliament.

He was Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary between 1999 and 2006, and became Deputy Leader in 2003 before being elected leader of the Liberal Democrats in March 2006. He stood down from the leadership in October 2007.

He has been married to Elspeth Mary Urquhart since 1970.
