Our priorities

  • Positive about education and young people

We think the million young people in Scotland matter. We're determined to promote positive policies to encourage and support young people, not demonise them. We want to invest in excellent sports, music and drama facilities; turning our schools into community hubs open in the evening and at weekends. We want to empower young people and give them a real voice in our communities.

  • Dynamic Scotland

We are committed to creating a dynamic economy in Scotland. As Scotland's Enterprise Minister, Nicol Stephen delivered a cut in business rates and we want to go further still. We want to see lower business taxes and less regulation. We want to invest more in skills and infrastructure. We want to make Scotland and Scottish businesses more competitive in an increasingly global economy.

  • Greener Scotland

Climate change is the biggest threat facing our generation. If we are to take it seriously we need to take action in every area of Scottish society. We want Scotland to become the green energy powerhouse of Europe. The Scottish Liberal Democrats are determined to support this vital investment - and reject new nuclear power in Scotland. We want ambitious targets and action across a number of areas so that by 2050 we should generate all of our electricity from clean, green, renewable sources like wave and tidal power.

  • Better health and wellbeing

We want more local health care with investment in new local health centres so people get faster diagnosis and treatment closer to where they live, with more nurses and dentists to make it happen. We want to improve health and wellbeing in Scotland - freeing people from the chains of ill health, tackling health inequalities and improving quality of life. If we fail to recognise that the environment in which people live, work, study and play has a real impact on their health and wellbeing then we will quite simply fail to improve the health of our nation.

  • Trust in people

We believe in giving local communities more power to influence their own lives. We want to put more trust in local people, giving communities more power to unlock the creativity of Scotland's people.

  • Cutting crime

We want our communities to be safer with more community police officers to cut crime and make people safer. We want tough community sentences to make criminals work to repay their crimes and stop reoffending. And we want tough action to tackle the menace of knife crime.
