At both ends of the West Highland Way, only the Liberal Democrats can beat the SNP
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today said that in huge parts of Scotland and at both ends of the West Highland Way, in places like Milngavie and Fort William, only the Liberal Democrats can beat the SNP, put the needs of communities first and fix our broken politics.
During a campaign visit to the start of the West Highland Way in Mid Dunbartonshire, the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader highlighted that there were just 149 votes between the SNP and the Liberal Democrats when the seat was formerly East Dunbartonshire. At the 2019 election, there was a majority of just 0.28%, making this the closest fought seat in Scotland. At the other end of the West Highland Way, polling this week suggests that Liberal Democrat candidate Angus Macdonald is closing in on the SNP in Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire.
Earlier this week, the SNP put separation at page one, line one of their manifesto. This is despite recent polling by YouGov which shows that constitutional issues were deemed the least important in a list of 19 issues facing voters.
Alex highlighted that Liberal Democrats are putting “public service” at the heart of their offer to voters, stating that the party would ensure fast access to GPs, get everyone seen by an NHS dentist, lift up Scottish education and end the scandal of sewage dumping.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“For too long, the SNP have only ever talked about what matters to them. If it isn’t about independence, they’re not interested.
“They don’t seem to care about people struggling to see their GP or find an NHS dentist. They’ve got no answers for the parents who are worried about their child getting the support they need at school.
“Liberal Democrats are dedicated to a politics of public service. People deserve to have voices in parliament who will stand up for them and for what matters to their communities.
“Having knocked every door in Mid Dunbartonshire, Susan Murray and her team have had thousands of meaningful conversations with people throughout the constituency. Susan gets business, knows what it means to be a carer and raised half-a-million pounds to build a skate park even before she became a councillor.
"At the other end of the West Highland Way, Angus MacDonald will be a strong voice for the Highlands. From serving in the army to starting a host of successful businesses and raising millions for charity, he's someone who can get things done.
“By backing the Scottish Liberal Democrats, you will get a local champion who’ll stand up for you, who’ll fight for your community and ensure no one is left behind.
“In seats across the country, from Milngavie to Mallaig, from Cupar to Cape Wrath, from Cramond to Kirkwall, it’s only the Scottish Liberal Democrats who can beat the SNP and fix our broken politics.”
