Cole-Hamilton responds to 24% drop in nursing applications
Responding to the news that the number of applicants for nursing courses in Scotland has dropped by 24%, representing the sharpest fall of any UK nation and the second year in a row where applications have decreased, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader and health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
“There are gaping holes across our NHS and burned-out healthcare workers are crying out for reinforcements.
“Pay disputes and poor working conditions have taken a heavy toll on the mental health of nurses. No wonder many potential applicants will look at the state of Scotland's nursing sector and turn away.
“The Health Secretary must lead the way in promoting nursing as a rewarding career. The government needs to invest in strong workforce planning to ensure that the NHS has the staff it needs to flourish.”
