McArthur responds to shockingly low level of police officers

7 Feb 2023

Responding to the news that the number of police officers is at its lowest level since December 2008, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“Coming against the backdrop of rising levels of sexual and violent crime, these figures will make for alarming reading.

"Staff surveys suggest that many officers feel unsupported, overwhelmed and stretched dangerously thin.

“There is a real risk that officers heading for the exit will leave the service without the experience and skills that are so crucial in helping keep communities safe.

“The Scottish Government must make sure officers have the support and resources they need to do their job, and the opportunities for development and career progression that make the long hours and tough conditions feel worth it."
