Responding to the Scottish Government’s announcement that it will seek views on the reform of council tax this year, Scottish Liberal Democrat economy spokesperson Willie Rennie said:

“The SNP have been promising council tax for reform almost 20 years. I have sat in a room with minister after minister and set out our proposals with no constructive response from ministers. I have seen the issue farmed out to round tables and consultations and nothing ever comes of it. No one believes the SNP will actually reform council tax.

“Until the SNP – the party currently in power - are willing to say what alternative system would be acceptable to them, the current unfair and badly designed system is here to stay.

“Council finances are a complete mess but no one should give a single second to SNP promises to do anything different.”
